Historical facts of Radium Spring Albany GA

Radium Spring Albany GA is a natural wonder that was once one of the most famous resort areas. It now preserved as an eco-friendly and environmental park. The park established on Radium Springs Road in Albany, is a very attractive spot on the eastern side of the Flint River, in the city of Albany. It is an example of the seven natural wonders of Georgia. It pours out 70,000 gallons of fresh and clear water per minute. The renowned origin pumps 20 C water from an underground cave. The park also features a terrace, a casino garden, new sidewalks, and gazebos. The garden got this name when traces of naturally occurring radium observed in its water.

A public swimming hole and fishing spot for generations, the spring was initially known as Blue Spring. Blue hole springs termed so because they look dark and unusually blue, which are significant origins of the Flint River. More than 120 varieties of fish and reptiles live in such river springs. Large fishes swim far below the surface and a large population of wild animals living in the area around the origin. Despite its long history as a local spot for fishing and swimming, it was an unexpected discovery in the early '20s that made it a famous resort. Testing showed that the water flowing from the spring carried traces of radium.

There are gardens, interpretive panels, walkaways, spectacular natural beauty, and the ruins of the historic resort. Creek Indians once lived, hunted, and fished in the area surrounding the radium origin. Swimming is no longer allowed due to radium present in the water. The spring was still a favourite swimming place for Albany area citizens until 1994 when the casino and other memorable constructions sustained massive damage in the Tropical Storm Alberto flooding. A second flood inflicted even more damage in 1998. Sadly, the casino was severely damaged to save. The property and remains of the spring area of the resort acquired by state and local governments now reconstructed. It included a casino, a hotel, walking trails, bathhouses, and one of the most elegant golf fields in Georgia. In 2010 Radium Spring Gardens was transformed into an attractive and beautiful historic site and botanical garden.
